Superman Returns:Superman's Secret and Christian Symbolism

Superman Returns is based on Superman's return to earth after a five year absence from planet earth. It makes me wonder what Superman was doing in those five years especially since we all know that Krypton was destroyed. And you do not spend all that time in outer space just floating around doing nothing especially if you are a superhero. What did he find? Who did he meet. I get the feeling from the Movie Superman Returns that he found another planet got married and has two kids. I say this because in the movie I did not see that kind of connection between Lois and Superman that they usually have. I think Superman is missing his sweet little alien wife on Planet "Only Superman Knows." I mean I do not want to ruin the movie but in the end he says "See you around Lois" and drifts away into outer space where he gets that aura of contentment. I say Superman is hiding something out there in space.

After spending 5 years in outer space, looking for the remains of planet Krypton, Superman returns to Earth. He returns to find Lois Lane, living with Richard White and has a son. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor plots an evil plan, using crystals and Kryptonite he stole from the Fortress of Solitude, to create a new land and submerge the USA.

Superman Returns is a 2006 superhero film based on the fictional DC Comics character Superman. It was directed by Bryan Singer and stars Brandon Routh, Kate Bosworth and Kevin Spacey. The screenplay was written by Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris.

Superman Returns is the first Superman film to be released in twenty years. The last Superman film was Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.

Superman Returns has Christian parallels and symbolism.

In the latest installment of the Man of Steel, the story is presented as a Christian parable. After leaving Earth for 5 years to visit his home planet, Superman returns to find that Earth has lost hope in him as its savior. We are reminded that Jor-El has sent his only son to Earth because people are basically good. We get to see Superman rekindle his relationship with Lois Lane, who now has a son of questionable paternity; could it be Superman's son being raised by another man. Superman fights the evil in the form of Lex Luther. Can Superman save humanity? Does humanity have faith in him?

The mind is a terrible thing to waste. This is what religious studies professor and Kabbalah enthusiast Saul Naumann (Richard Gere) believes. He encourages his family to go that extra step, both in academics and in spirituality. But he also often alienates them as he is only able to shine his light on one of them at a time. When 9-year-old Eliza (Flora Cross) turns out to be a spelling bee prodigy, well, it's just the icing on Saul's cake, but it further tears at the family's delicate fabric. As Saul spends more and more time with Eliza, her older brother, Aaron (Max Minghella), rebels by experimenting with other religions, while their mother, Miriam (Juliette Binoche), sort of goes off the deep end. With her family disintegrating before her young eyes, it's up to Eliza to put the broken pieces of her world back together with the power of letters and words. - Yahoo movies

The Plot: City Lights

Chaplin's Tramp, who is broke and homeless, meets a poor blind girl (Virginia Cherrill) selling flowers on the streets and falls in love with her. The blind girl mistakes him for a millionaire. Since he wants to help her and doesn't want to disappoint her he keeps up the charade.

As the story goes along he saves a millionaire from committing suicide and the running gag throughout the film is when the millionaire is drunk he is the best of friends with the tramp right until he sobers up and can't remember him. Meanwhile the tramp works small jobs such as street sweeping and enters a boxing contest, all to raise money for an operation to restore the blind girl's sight.

In the end it is a casual gift of a thousand dollars from his drunken millionaire friend that eventually pay for the operation that restores the blind girl's sight. Unfortunately like many of the tramp's efforts things go wrong and he is mistakenly accused of stealing the money when the millionaire sobers up. But the tramp manages to get the money to the blind girl, telling her that he is going away on a trip shortly before he is arrested and sent to jail for several months.

The ending is widely acclaimed as one of cinema's most touching. Released from jail, the tramp ends up on the same street corner where the flower girl, her sight restored, has opened up a flower shop with her grandmother; every time a rich man comes into the shop she wonders if this is her mysterious benefactor. The tramp spots a flower in the gutter and as he goes to pick it up is tormented by a couple of kids as the flower girl laughs. Then he turns around, sees her, and stops. She laughs and tells her grandmother she has made another conquest. Seeing the flower fall apart in his hand, she goes out to give him a flower and a coin - and then she touches his hand and stops when she realizes it feels familiar. Slowly her hand goes up to touch the face of the tramp. 'You?' she says as she realizes that the tramp before her is the reason she can see. 'Yes' replies the nervous tramp, his face a map of shame, pride, love and devotion. 'You can see now?,' he asks. 'Yes. I can see now,' she replies (in later prints Chaplin removed the last title card since it was obvious what she is saying). The film ends with an unusual close up of the tramp and the music continues to swell for some time after the shot fades to black.

Charlie Chaplin: A Dog's Life

A Dog's Life (1918) is a silent film written, produced, and directed by Charlie Chaplin. This was Chaplin's first film for First National Films.

Chaplin plays opposite an animal as 'co-star'. 'Scraps' (the dog) is the hero in this film, as she helps Charlie and Edna toward a better life. Edna Purviance plays a dance hall singer and Charlie Chaplin, the tramp. Sydney Chaplin (Chaplin's brother) had a small role in this film; this was the first time the two brothers were on screen together.

Other films where dogs appeared on screen with Chaplin were The Champion (1915), The Gold Rush (1925), City Lights (1931), and Modern Times (1936).

Charlie Chaplin - The Kid

Charlie Chaplin Movies

The Kid is a 1921 Charlie Chaplin film featuring Jackie Coogan as Chaplin's adopted son and sidekick. The film was a huge success, and was the second-highest grossing film in 1921, behind The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

The Kid is about a Tramp (Chaplin) that finds an abandoned baby in an alley and takes care of him. As the baby gets older, they are perfect together and they form little schemes to scam people in order to survive.

Chaplin and Coogan both give remarkable performances in The Kid. The film made Coogan, who was a vaudeville performer, into the first major child star of the movies.
